Zero Waste Shaving For $1

We may earn money or products from the companies mentioned in this post.

Almost everytime I shower I shave my legs, it’s just a normal part of my routine and has been for over the past decade. I never saw any harm in it, but over the past year I’ve started to become more self-aware of my disposable items and wanted to look for a change.

In the United States, the EPA found that over 2 Billion disposable razors are thrown out each year. That is an insane amount! But when you think about the fact that disposable razors are only meant to last for five to 10 shaves, it’ll add up. I thought about not shaving altogether after I found this out but there is something about climbing into bed with clean sheets and freshly shaven legs.

So like any broke millennial, I went to the Dollar Tree. The Dollar Tree is a store here in the United States that sells everything for $1. I’ve purchased so many items from the Dollar Tree that I never really thought about them having plastic free options for shaving. But they had a Safety Razor set with 5 blades for $1!

I was skeptical but thought about the good that could come if this did work out and purchased it. That was back in August when I came back from Spain and I haven’t purchased a single disposable razor since. This $1 kit leaves me with the closest shave I’ve ever had in my entire life.

Don’t get me wrong, I’ve knicked myself a good half dozen times since switching over to this safety razor kit but now that I’ve learned how to properly use a safety razor, it’s a quick shave that lasts longer than any razor I’ve tried before. What you’re basically paying for is what you put the blades into. I personally would prefer to pay less as all blades fit into all types of safety razors.

But if you don’t have Dollar Tree near you, there are two options.

1: Purchase a Bulk from DollarTree

On the Dollar Tree website, they sell a case (36 items) of the Safety Razor Kit. If you’re one person this is insane, but since it’s the holidays I wanted to include this as it can be a great gift for your family and friends if they’re looking at transitioning to more eco-friendly lifestyle. You can put it in stockings and maybe it’ll spread more of the zero waste lifestyle!

2: Try an alternative from Amazon

Amazon is great in the sense that they have everything you’ll ever need. Before I knew about the safety razor at the Dollar Tree I had planned to purchase this kit from Amazon as it has great reviews.

The one part of waste with this zero waste shaving method is the blades. The blades can be difficult to recycle as most centers do not accept them as normal recycling. So I wanted to share a company I found that will recycle them for you.

RiteKnife has a blade recycle program, and the only thing you have to do is store your blades safely until you have enough to mail out to them.  Simple and easy!

As for purchasing blades, I recommend Derby Blades as they have over 1,000 reviews on this 100 pack that costs less than $9 (making it 9 cents a blade). It’ll save you money and help the environment. What else could you ask for?

This is my shaving cream on the left, I tried to hand whip it which is why it looks strange and I put it in a sour cream container I had which is why it doesn’t look ‘pretty’. But this is real life and my shaving cream is in a sour cream container.

All credit for this creation goes to Melody Joy as I found her post about a DIY shaving cream with only 2 ingredients and went for it.

All you need is:

  • 3/4 cup of Baking Soda
  • 1 cup liquid Castille Soap
  • 1 1/2 cups of Water
  1.  Combine all your ingredients into an 8-quart pot and turn the heat on the stove to medium.
  2. Stir and wait until it foams up to the top rim and set off heat to cool.
  3. Let cool for 4 hours
  4. Scoop out all the solid and whip it in a mixer.
  5. Once done, put it in a container and stick it in the shower!

On the link above more details are given, along with photos so you can follow along, but it’s an easy DIY that’ll leave you with enough shaving cream to last a year.

This is a great method for anyone on a budget or trying to simplify the number of products they have in their life. I’m so happy to have found all these products and hope you enjoy including them into your life!
