It’s time to stop looking back and reminiscing about the year and focus on what is next. I try my best to always keep looking forward, but it’s good to remember where you came from. But for the purpose of this post, I want to talk about what I’m keeping in mind for the 2019 year.
These goals vary from big and small, but I think that goes for a lot of things. I no longer make goals of I want to be at the specific spot one year from now because I know that never works. This year I traveled solo, left my apartment, and moved to another country for 3 months. I also tried to travel more but spent a good amount of time with family instead. It doesn’t always work out the way you think it will.
The first big change I made in 2018, that I hope to carry into 2019, is my love and enjoyment of the zero waste community. If you’re new to this idea, it’s where you try and limit your single use consumption and switching to more sustainable ways of life. This year I made some great strides, from reusable bags to safety razor shaving but I want to be able to do more.
While not all of my Goals are Sustainability based, a good majority are because I care about helping the planet so that I can travel and see it all.
Create a Zero Waste To-Go bag (AND TAKE IT EVERYWHERE)
I fall short most often when I go out with zero waste. So, I’ve decided the best way for me, is to create a bag with my zero waste necessities.
I love getting coffee so I know I need to pack my reusable mug in my bag for outings alongside my reusable straw. It’s easy for me to remember my bags but I only have 2 right now and think I should purchase a few more so I can fit ALL my purchases in these bags.
Only buy Thrift (or from Ethical Brands)
I’ve been thrifting for most of my life, but now that I’m becoming more environmentally aware, I love thrifting more than ever before. Not only are you giving new life to items that someone else didn’t want anymore, but you’re paying a fraction of the cost of buying new. Thrifting involves some skill because you need to be able to examine the items and think creatively for what they could become but once you get the handle of it Thrifting is great.
I’m a huge fan of ThredUp because sometimes it’s nice to let someone else do the work of examining the products. I buy all my jeans on there because they are the hardest item (for me) to thrift. But even buying on ThredUp I still pay $10-25 for a pair of $80 jeans. (If you’re reading this in January use the coupon SPLURGE15 along with the $10 for extra bonus savings)
Sometimes you can’t buy used but supporting an Ethical brand is next step. GoodOnYou is a great site that’ll give you a rating on any brand you’re interested in shopping from.
Drink Water
I need to remember to drink water, I can remember to drink 5 cups of coffee during a day but picking up a glass of water is the hardest because it tast
Fall in Love with Myself
This is a long term goal I’ve been focusing on for the past year, but with coming back home to Ohio I want to make sure I don’t fall into old routines but create new ones. Whether it’s eating less fast food or wearing the red lipstick I love so much I want to be able to do more of what I truly enjoy.
I feel it would be cliché of me to say that I want to travel more, be healthier, and spend more time with my loved ones but I know I can only try my best. Yes, I would love to travel throughout South America after going down a few dress sizes but even if I just learn to smile wider, 2019 will be a great year.
Until Next Time,
